PUERTO RICO – Interesting AI Test Case

ELIZABETH TORRES FOUND NOT GUILTY IN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CASE

Groundbreaking forensic report reveals evidence was manipulated using Artificial Intelligence

(San Juan, Puerto Rico) — In a groundbreaking decision that sets a precedent for digital evidence in Puerto Rico’s courts, the court has declared Ms. Elizabeth Torres NOT GUILTY in a case alleging a violation of a protective order under Law 54 on Domestic Violence.

The defence was led by esteemed criminal attorney Lic. Maritza Torres, in collaboration with Digital Forensic Expert Fernando Fernández and Forensic Audio & Acoustics Expert Lyanne Flores Báez. Together, the team presented compelling forensic evidence proving that the screenshots submitted in court had been digitally altered and that the audio clip allegedly featuring Ms. Torres’s voice had been generated using Artificial Intelligence voice cloning technology.

“This case proves that screenshots should never be admitted as standalone evidence,” stated Mr. Fernández. “Only full physical extractions from devices, conducted with forensic integrity, can ensure the authenticity of digital evidence — something that was not done in this case.”

Ms. Flores’s forensic audio analysis demonstrated multiple inconsistencies: unnatural fundamental frequency, irregularities in formants, lack of breath sounds, atypical inflection patterns, and abrupt changes in waveform behavior. All indicators pointed clearly to AI-generated audio.

“A single minute of audio is all it takes to ruin someone’s life if not properly examined,” warned Ms. Flores. “Artificial Intelligence can now fabricate voices — and even videos — that appear real, and it’s critical that law enforcement, prosecutors, and courts stay educated and vigilant.”

This is the first known case in Puerto Rico in which a court has evaluated and rejected evidence manipulated through Artificial Intelligence, setting a powerful precedent for the treatment of digital materials in criminal cases moving forward.
