The day celebrates investigators’ commitment to discovering facts, gathering evidence and assisting individuals, businesses and legal professionals.
It is primarily a professional observance rather than an official worldwide public holiday.
Eugène-François Vidocq: a brief history
Eugène-François Vidocq (24 July 1775–11 May 1857) was a French criminal who became a pioneering detective and one of the most influential figures in the history of criminal investigation.
Born in Arras, France, Vidocq had a turbulent youth. He served in the army but later became involved in theft, fraud and forgery.
He received a sentence of hard labour and became famous for repeatedly escaping from prisons and penal institutions.
Around 1809, Vidocq began working secretly as an informer for the Paris police.
His knowledge of criminals, disguises and the underworld made him exceptionally effective.
In 1812, he helped establish the Brigade de Sûreté, a plain-clothes criminal-investigation unit that developed into the French Sûreté.
He frequently employed former criminals because they understood criminal behaviour and could operate undercover.
After leaving the police, Vidocq established the Bureau des Renseignements in 1833.
It is widely regarded as the first known private detective agency.
It investigated fraud, theft, dishonest employees and commercial disputes, although Vidocq’s unconventional methods repeatedly brought him into conflict with the authorities.
Vidocq promoted techniques including undercover investigation, surveillance, systematic criminal records and the examination of physical evidence.
Some stories about his innovations come from his colourful and partly unreliable memoirs, so historians treat certain claims cautiously.
His extraordinary life influenced several literary characters, including Jean Valjean and Inspector Javert in Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables and figures in the writings of Honoré de Balzac.
Today, Vidocq is frequently described as the first modern detective and a founder of private investigation.
His birthday, 24 July, is commemorated as Private Investigators Day, and stylised as 24/7
