Private investigators being mentioned in stories like this always makes me pause.

A recent Scottish Daily Record and Sunday Mail Ltd article reports claims from Joanna Cherry’s new book that Alex Salmond feared a “private detective” had been engaged to spy on him, and that Cherry was warned she may also have been under surveillance. The SNP has denied the claim.

Whatever the politics, there is a bigger point here for our profession.

This is not how professional private investigators operate.

A proper investigator does not simply “spy” on someone because a client asks them to. There must be a lawful and legitimate purpose. There must be assessment, compliance, proportionality, and a clear reason for any enquiry being made.

If someone is being used to gather material for a smear campaign, dig through bins, or collect personal information without lawful basis, they are not acting as a professional investigator. They are damaging the reputation of an essential profession.

Private investigators in the UK, Ireland, and globally provide vital services across fraud, litigation support, due diligence, asset tracing, missing persons, corporate investigations and many other lawful matters. The work is important, but it must be done properly.

As always, use a professional investigator who understands compliance, ethics, data protection and lawful purpose. In the UK, that means looking for investigators connected with recognised professional associations such as the The Association of British Investigators or INSTITUTE OF PROFESSIONAL INVESTIGATORS LIMITED(THE).

For cross-border or international matters, the same principle applies. Organisations such as the Council of International Investigators (CII), the World Association of Detectives (WAD), INTELLENET, World Association of Professional Investigators WAPI and similar professional networks exist because trust, standards and accountability matter, especially when enquiries cross jurisdictions.

There is a world of difference between a professional investigator and a data broker or wannabe operating in the shadows. That difference matters.
